Ultrasound

This test uses sound waves (not x-rays) to make a picture of the breast. This test helps to see if the problem area is  liquid or solid. Ultrasound is used for routine screening.

What can I expect?

  • An ultrasound takes about 15-20 minutes. It is painless.
  • A gel is put on the skin. The gel helps the movement of sound waves. A small hand-held device is rolled back and forth over the breast area. The gel is easy to wash off.

 How can I prepare?

  • You will be asked to undress from the waist up. It is easier if you wear a two-piece outfit.

I have a friend who is a breast cancer survivor. It has been 11 years since she was diagnosed and she says the experience of having gone through this has greatly enriched her life. She has met many people, traveled to different places, and had to re-evaluate what is important in her life. I'm not saying it was an easy journey for her but she is very dedicated to helping others and I know she has been an inspiration to others and is a great role model. I am very proud to be her friend.
