Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy

A needle is put into the breast with the help of an ultrasound. A small core of tissue is then removed for testing.

What can I expect?

  • The procedure takes about 30-40 minutes.
  • The breast area is cleaned with a special solution. Local freezing will be put into the biopsy area.
  • The biopsy needle is put into the area and a core of tissue is removed. Several cores may be taken and sent to the lab for testing.
  • After the test, ice and pressure will be put on the area to prevent bleeding. You should not do a lot of tiring activity for up to 48 hours.
  • There may be a small amount of bleeding and some discomfort in your breast as the freezing wears off.
  • Most women will not have a scar after the biopsy.

 How can I prepare?

  • You may eat or drink before the test.
  • If you take blood thinners, ask your family doctor before the procedure if your dosage should be changed for a short time.
  • You will be asked to undress from the waist up. It may be easier to wear a two-piece outfit.
  • If possible, have someone drive you home after the test.

I am a breast cancer survivor of 2 years. I have recently been diagnosed with Lymphedema in my left arm and I am going for therapy at the Cancer Center. With the support of my family, and the many wonderful people at the center, patients and staff, I have been able to look at life in such a different way. Thank God for watching over me.
