The Algoma District Cancer Program (ADCP) provides care to patients of all ages and in all stages of living with cancer.  It is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of oncologists, palliative care physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff, a clinical dietician and a social worker.  Access is also available to a hospital chaplain.  The ADCP is active in clinical trials and has a clinical trials department.

 

The outpatient component includes the offices of the Medical Oncologists, exam rooms, a procedure room and the chemotherapy suite.

 

For: Oncology outpatient care, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, other IV therapies (antibiotics, blood products), immunotherapy, procedures (therapeutic & diagnostic), pain management, symptom control, patient and family education.

 

Referral: Patients are referred to a Medical Oncologist by a surgeon or by their family doctor.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

Those traveling from St. Joseph Island and Thessalon, or places in between, may be able to have their treatment administered closer to home.  Patients from Wawa, Blind River, Hornepayne or Elliot Lake can arrange to have their treatment given in their local health care facility (see separate sheets).  Visits with the Medical Oncologist at the clinic will be required at specific intervals.

 

Oncology Unit (inpatient services)

 

An inpatient unit provides care under the direction of Medical Oncologists.  Family participation in patient care is encouraged.

Palliative Care

 

Palliative Care is available to patients and their families who are facing progressive life-threatening illness and who are no longer responsive to cure-oriented therapies.  The focus of care is comfort and enhanced quality of life through active symptom control (physical, emotional and spiritual).  Family participation in patient care is encouraged and visiting hours are flexible.

 

For:  24-hour specialized nursing care and family support

Support Services

 

• Look Good Feel Better

 

This is a national non-profit program sponsored by the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry & Fragrance Association.  A free two-hour workshop run by trained volunteers is held in the hospital each month, where women learn about makeup tips and hair alternatives, and go home with a complimentary kit of cosmetics and personal care products.

• Wellness Post Cancer Treatment Class

 

This is a monthly two-hour session that covers nutrition and exercise post treatment, when the focus should be on health and the prevention of disease recurrence.  Classes are held by a Registered Dietician and a Registered Physiotherapist.
