The Timmins and District Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society serves the following communities: Hearst, Hornepayne, Smooth Rock Falls, Iroquois Falls, Englehart, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Kirkland Lake, and Cochrane.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers, whose mission is the eradication of cancer, and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society achieves its mission through research, education, patient services and advocacy for healthy public policy. These efforts are supported by volunteers and staff with funds raised in communities accross Canada.

One-to-one support
The Canadian Cancer Society offers a bilingual nationwide telephone support service that matches people living with cancer or their caregivers with a trained volunteer who has been through a similar cancer experience.  In some communities, the service responds to requests for in-person visits.  Whenever possible, matches are based upon the cancer-specific experiences and personal attributes that are important to the client.

The service is free, confidential, responsive and accessible.

Volunteers are trained to offer encouragement, compassion and helpful resources to clients immediately after diagnosis, before surgery, in the hospital or at any time during treatment.  The service can also match in 18 different languages.

Group support
The Canadian Cancer Society also offers a group support service for adults.  Trained volunteers facilitate educational and informal discussions to help people living with cancer and their caregivers work through the issues related to a cancer diagnosis.  The Society’s support groups are available in numerous communities in Ontario.

On the web www.cancer.ca: The Canadian Cancer Society’s website offers information about cancer, ways to reduce one’s risk, early detection and treatment. The site also helps visitors locate support services in communities across Ontario through the Community Services Directory.

The site highlights research projects and progress and offers visitors the opportunity to volunteer or to donate. Located at www.cancer.ca, information is available in English and French, 24 hours a day.

Community Services Directory: The Canadian Cancer Society’s online Community Services Directory can help users find support services close to home. Located at www.cancer.ca, the directory can be searched 24 hours a day by a specific service name and/or location.  It lists approximately 4,000 community services Canadians can turn to for help.  The directory covers a huge range of services including screening programs, treatment locations, support groups, smoking cessation programs, wigs and prostheses.

Help getting to treatment
If people living with cancer do not have the means to travel, the Canadian Cancer Society can help them get to the cancer-related care they need. Our trained volunteer drivers pick patients up and take them to the local hospital or regional cancer centre and offer friendly support along the way. And if a volunteer driver is not available, or if it is too far for a volunteer to drive, then assistance may be available for people living with cancer to use public transportation, to access the Northern Health Travel Grant or to drive their child to treatment.

Find comfort and support at cancer centers, lodges and community hospitals Canadian Cancer Society volunteers work in regional cancer centers and a number of hospital cancer clinics across Ontario to provide support, comfort and information to people receiving treatment.

When a regional cancer centre is long distance from home, staying in one of the lodges that the Canadian Cancer Society built can provide a comfortable alternative. In addition to providing a comfortable home away from home, the lodges often offer volunteer-led activities, information sessions and support groups.

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Smokers’ Helpline is a free, bilingual, confidential telephone service you can call for easy access to a trained quit specialist.  We can help you develop a structured “Quit Plan”, answer your questions about quitting and refer you to services in your community.
